The 2020 Season kicked off at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex, Saturday, January 11th. The athletes of Speed Athletics arrived with some butterflies in their stomachs, but when it was time for business and the gun went off, the team came out on fire.
Taking on the first meet of the season with Odd Events, a few of the athletes step outside their comfort zone and slayed the events like they were taking down Goliath.
There were strong performances on the day from both the girls and boys. The majority of the younger athletes competed up in age groups and held their own coming in very short times apart from the older athletes. The younger kids are only going to get better as we move forward. We are confident many of them will stand a chance at making the selection for the CUT Games later in the season.
For the older girls, they put on a strong performance bringing in a few 2nd and 3rd place finishes for both the U17 and U20 events. A few Personal Best were set within the group. A big stand out for improvement was Camerin Porter, taking on the Long Jump to start her day with a PB on the first jump bettering her previous PB of 3.37m to new PB of 3.75m, then turning around and dropping more than 4 seconds from her time for a PB in the 150m. Job well done!
The big excitement came in with the boys. The boys were locking up 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes all around the track in the U17 and U20 events. While all the boys did amazing the three big standouts were Neil Brown-Mclennon (U20), Bradley Erskine Jr. (U17) and Alex Gordon (U17). These young men just dominated their heats/events.
Everyone is excited to see what comes next as the athletes start heading into their regular season events and start preparing for the CARIFTA Games. 2020 is looking like it could be a very exciting year.
